"The CIS breakdown of 2014-2015 Census statistics reveal growth in both legal and illegal immigration from Cuba, VietNam and [Red China] -- and an explosive influx from South Asian countries such as Pakistan, India and Afghanistan that has more than doubled in five years, from 271K to 550K. According to the pro-immigration control group, record highs were recorded by immigration from East Asia, which hit 583K, and the Caribbean, which reached 307K. Also, Latin American nations other than Mexico nearly doubled since 2013, jumping from 458K in the 2012-2013 period to 878K in the following two years, according to CIS. The number of immigrants from Mexico increased slightly to 338K in 2014-2015 -- about one-third of the total from 10 years ago, the Center reports... In all, 3.1M new legal and illegal immigrants settled in the United States in 2014 and 2015 -- a 39% increase over the prior 2 years, the Center reports. Of the total, 1.1M, or 550K annually, were illegal immigrants, up from the 700K illegal immigrants, or 350K annually, entering in 2012 and 2013. "A few days ago, I posted a short item on the irony of the Department of Justice (DoJ) asking the 5th circuit court of appeals to over-turn USA district court judge Andrew Hanen's order imposing sanctions on DoJ attorneys for repeatedly misleading his court in their briefs. DoJ claims that judge Hanen's order exceeds the scope of his constitutional authority. But another portion of the order directed DoJ to turn over to him the names and identifying data of all of the 100K-plus [NIGHTMARES] who received extensions under another, related [unconstitutional and illegal] executive action program that the DoJ attorneys had promised the judge were not being acted on (the source of the repeated misrepresentations to the judge). DoJ is also appealing that directive to the 5th Circuit. As Hans von Spakovsky has noted, DoJ has asserted in its brief that doing so would 'breach the confidence of these individuals (and of others who submit information to USCIS) in the privacy of such records', while at the same time acknowledging that illegal aliens have no privacy rights under federal law. The Privacy Act [of 1974=PA1974; an amendment to FOIA; S3418/HR16373 introduced by Sam J. Ervin & William S. Moorhead; Public Law 93-579; 5 USC 552a; 88 Stat. 1896-1909; GPO S/N 052-001-004-00439-6] is very clear in limiting privacy rights to 'USA persons' who are defined as USA citizens and lawfully resident aliens -- nobody else. Unsurprisingly, a coalition of open borders groups has now banded together to also ask the Fifth Circuit to quash Judge Hanen's directive to turn over identifying records, via a petition for a writ of mandamus. News media carrying the story helpfully cite the stories of a couple of the affected [NIGHTMARES], Angela Villalobos and Juan Escalante, both of whom are quoted. Apparently a fear of having their privacy invaded doesn't extend to speaking to the media. How curious. This make-it-up-as-you-go approach by the [Obummer regime] toward creating and expanding the faux privacy rights of illegal aliens may seem innocuous, perhaps even laudable, but it is not. It has been used by the administration to withhold information from citizens who have been the victims of crimes by illegal aliens, and who rightly seek to know who has harmed them (see here and here, for example). That is one reason why the Center, when it published a list of 79 actions the next president could take to undo the damage wrought by the [Obummer regime], added a section on eliminating false privacy 'rights' and assisting victims of alien crime (items 69 through 73). Whether any of our suggestions comes to pass, including those to rescind the fake privacy rights of illegal aliens in favor of hewing to federal law, naturally will depend on the November elections. In the mean-time, the 5th Circuit has a chance to exercise its prerogative to force the administration back into line in at least this one area -- and in so doing, protect the rights of victims and, significantly, the right of the public to know what is going on behind the curtain at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and its subordinate agencies. All the appellate court need do is deny the mandamus, and require DoJ (and DHS) to honor judge Hanen's directive."

"One of the irritating aspects of the American press is its routine refusal to report in any detail on the immigration status of prominent criminals. Take the recent case of Mainak Sarkar, an apparently thin-skinned and mentally unbalanced citizen of India who first killed his estranged wife, a USA citizen whose marriage to him made him a green card carrier, and then, a week or so ago, shot the university professor who helped him overcome what sounds like a marginal dissertation to secure his PhD. Subsequently Sarkar killed himself, according to the Associated Press. All that the AP story tells us about his immigration status is that he arrived from India with an Indian bachelor's degree in 2001 on a student (F-1) visa and, at the time of his death, he had a green card. Using the AP report for clues, as well as Times of India and Daily Mail coverage, we can outline his probable civil status as follows: 2001-2003: Arrives in the USA with a F-1 visa and works as a research assistant at the University of Texas at Arlington; 2003-2005: At Stanford getting a master's degree in engineering, probably still on the F-1 visa; 2005-2011: Studying for a PhD at UCLA; his immigration status during at least part of the time would have been as an F-1 student, but he also could have had periods of optional practical training (OPT), a version of the F-1 status for college grads, or H-1B status as he worked during part of this time for a Texas firm; 2011: Marries the USA citizen that he subsequently killed, Ashley Hasti, a medical student at the time of her death; they subsequently separated, but when it is not clear; at this point he has a conditional green card; 2013: After a long struggle, he gets his PhD at UCLA, and apparently his permanent green card as well; 2014: Works for a while at an Ohio-based rubber company, Endurica, separating from them the same year; 2016: Kills his estranged wife in Minnesota, then drives west to kill professor William Klug and another UCLA professor who was, happily, absent from the campus on the day that Klug was killed; then Sarkar kills himself. Sarkar was said to be furious with Klug, contending that Klug had stolen code from him and given it to another student. A missing element of the press coverage was his source of funding throughout these years when he was not, as he was off and on, in private industry. Routinely PhD candidates in the hard sciences at a prestigious place like UCLA are fully funded by the university, often with the help of research grants from the federal government. How much American money was devoted to his education? Nor were we told anything about the nature of Sarkar's marriage, and nothing may ever be known, since both the participants are dead. Was it a genuine marriage that simply collapsed, as many marriages do, or did he gull her into a marriage only to get the green card, and then dump her when the card arrived? It should be noted that murders by PhDs -- native or foreign-born -- are distinctly the exception, not the rule; presumably 99.9-plus percent of murders are committed by people with less education. Murder and immigration-related marriage fraud, however, sometimes coincide, as we have reported in the past."

I want to focus on the selectivity of military recruiting -- a good thing, all in all, because it ensures smart, capable armed forces... In its recent vote on the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to fund troops, materiel, operations, and readiness, Congress had a chance to ditch a program called 'Military Accessions Vital to the National Interest' (MAVNI), which is a deliberately obscure name for the Pentagon's directive to its recruiters to sign up 'legal non-citizens with in-demand skills to join the [military] in exchange for expedited USA citizenship'. But, as with many of this administration's policies, what you think you see isn't what you get. The MAVNI net has been cast so wide that 'legal non-citizens' in fact includes illegal aliens... [contrary to] the expectation that they obey the immigration laws and leave or face deportation. Exactly why it is in the national interest to recruit illegal aliens of dubious loyalty, whose backgrounds are impossible to adequately investigate, and whose very identities are open to question, has never been explained. Representative Paul Gosar (R-AZ) introduced a floor amendment to kill the program during debate on the NDAA in mid-May. What happened? Despite promises to open up debate and end the dubious bottle-stopping tactics of his predecessor whenever disliked or inconvenient motions or amendments were put forward, House speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI), true to his open borders agenda, quickly, quietly, and effectively put a stake through the heart of the outrageous notion that the military is no place to experiment with immigration policy or push amnesty agendas. "1775-03-23... [Patrick Henry] had heard enough. He rose to defend his motion by delivering a sermon on 'the illusions of hope'. He conceded that it was natural to 'shut our eyes against painful truth' but ured that 'wise men engaged in a great and arduous struggle for liberty' not 'be of the number of those, who having eyes, see not, and having ears, hear not, the things which so nearly concern their temporal salvation'. He was willing to face the truth, however anguished, and, knowing the worst, make provision or it. Instead of the illusion of hope, [Patrick Henry] urged the convention to guide itself by 'the lamp of experience'. Calmly and solemnly he reviewed the course of the dispute with Great Britain and condemned the rising tone of violence and arrogance with which the colonial petitions and remonstrances had been greeted. Now a 'martial array' was dispatched to force them into submission. After all this, [Patrick Henry] said, 'we indulge the fond hope of peace and reconciliation... in vain'.
