Free, honest, open trade is good.   The abuses the political class and the crony socialists have been conducting and facilitating against the USA citizenry (and those of other countries in some cases) are very bad.   The so-called "free trade agreements", though, have not embodied actual free and honest trade, nor have they been constitutional.   Just because you call something "free" does not make it so.   When the Red Chinese dumped steel a few years ago, congress and Shrub took retaliatory half-measures which nonetheless resulted in secondary retaliatory measures, loss of USA jobs, and abject surrender to a blatantly anti-USA WTO (just as the RINO losership has been abjectly surrendering to the most extreme abuses by the left over the last 25+ years).

"...Under this administration, the entire Yearbook of Immigration Statistics has been transformed by leaving out the number of 'denials' of immigration benefits, thus eliminating possible criticism from both the left and the right and hiding the figures under the blanket of obscurity.   Victims of illegal alien crime, seeking information about the perpetrators of those offenses, have repeatedly been told that they are not entitled to the data because [the corrupt Obummer regime alleges] it would violate the privacy of those aliens -- even though FOIA requires it, and the federal Privacy Act clearly excludes all non-immigrant and illegal aliens from the scope of its coverage (see here and here).   Political appointees at DHS have been accused of manipulating and ignoring FOIA requests with the purpose of ensuring that embarrassing information either does not reach the public eye, or is finessed into its least damaging form.   One of the key figures in this effort was John Sandweg, later promoted to become director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (USAICE).   After his departure he was infamously quoted as saying that for 'a run-of-the-mill immigrant here illegally, your odds of getting deported are close to zero -- it's just highly unlikely to happen'.   Sandweg's predecessor at USAICE, John Morton, was forced to protest that he had not 'cooked the books' on deportation figures after it was revealed that the agency was 'adopting' Border Patrol removals in an effort to boost their numbers -- statistics that even [Obummer] was obliged to acknowledge were 'a little deceptive'.   Recently, the Department of Homeland Security nominated for a prestigious Secretary's award the supervisor who impeded agents trying to locate San Bernardino shooters Syed Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik, but refused to say exactly what she did to deserve it even though there is no rational basis not to provide the information.   DHS also recently declined to provide senate Judiciary [committee] staff access to file information as a part of their effort to document whether, and how many, immigrants have been involved in terrorist acts, attempts, or support.   It all comes down to this: When an administration is hell-bent on ignoring the [constitution & laws], it doesn't make a whit of difference what law is on the books.   The Obama White House didn't comply with the old FOIA provisions.   Why on earth would we believe they will abide by the new ones?"

Virginia legislature does the right thing on alien marriage issue
"The Virginia Legislature took an important step toward reducing green card-producing, abusive marriages of young female citizens...   Encouraged by a tiny Virginia lobbying group, both parties in the GOP-controlled state legislature set the minimum age for marriage at 18 under most circumstances, and at 16 with a court order.   Previously the minimum age was '13 or younger...   if she had parental consent and was pregnant', according to the Post.   While there were other serious problems with Virginia's earlier laws on the age of marriage, the major issue, in my mind at least, was that older -- sometimes decades older -- alien males were marrying young citizen girls of the same ethnic background, with the young women often being forced into loveless marriages by families deeply tied to the old country and old world ways.   The alien men then secured green cards they could not have possibly secured in any other way...   And these marriages were not forced on young women of, say, Finnish or Irish descent, it usually happened to those from Asian and/or Muslim backgrounds.   Again, no reporting on that variable...   such marriages tend to make integration of migrant communities less likely to occur.   This is, by the way much, much more of a problem for women than men.   Some 90% of the underage marriages involve young women.   Do such young women finish high school, much less college? Do they go to work? No, they have more babies, and more of them early, and thus are kept out of integrating institutions such as higher education and the workplace..."

My read is that she wanted to secure all or some of her messages from FOIA, but (through a combination of conceit, power-madness and ignorance) went about it in a way that made all of her messages insecure... and then obstructed justice by trying to permanently delete thousands of messages -- both "personal" and official State Department messages.

"...Last year, just 32% of 30-year-olds were out of school and living on their own with a spouse and child, compared to 71% in 1975.   A new Census Bureau infographic entitled 30-Year-Olds: Then and Now shows that in 1975, just one percent of 30-year-olds in the USA were enrolled in school, and 90% were living on their own.   In 2015, 8% of people in their 30s were enrolled in school, and only 70% were living on their own.   In 1975, 89% of adults in that age bracket had married, and 76% were living with a child.   In contrast, only 57% of those in their 30s had been married and less than half -- 47% -- lived with a child in 2015, according to the Census Bureau.   The infographic also provided some socioeconomic comparisons between 30-year-olds then and now.   More of them (90%) had a high school diploma in 2015 than in 1975 (80%) and more participated in the labor force (81% in 2015, compared to 71% in 1975).   However, just 55% of 30-year-olds earned a 'moderate income' last year -- defined as between 66% and 200% of the national average -- compared to 71% in 1975, the Census Bureau noted.   And only about a third (33%) of 30-year-olds owned homes in 2015, compared to more than half (56%) in 1975.

"Deeply ingrained in American mythology is the notion that succeeding generations of immigrants always do better than their forefathers.   This belief is predicated on the success that descendants of last century's great wave of immigration achieved.   While researchers have pointed out that that success was often slow and the result of specific historical forces, most importantly a 40-year period of significantly reduced immigration, it has nonetheless become romanticized and held up as a model for all future immigrant trajectories.   It worked in the past, say advocates for open-ended immigration, so there is no reason to be concerned.   This sort of thinking can quickly turn into ideology that has no use for facts.   One area where facts are in short supply is the impact of immigration on education.   In 1960, immigration accounted for less than 5% of Americans under age 18.   Today, more than one-quarter of the nation's 75M youths are foreign-born or the USA-born children of immigrants.   Their share is expected to grow to one-third of the under-18 population by mid-century.   Despite this enormous growth, there is no empirical assessment of how immigrants and their descendants are doing.   Public schools do not segregate their data and the scant research that has been compiled by outside researchers is typically limited to the first generation.   A new working paper by Umut Ozek and David Figlio, however, provides a rare look at the progress of first, second, and third generation Hispanic and Asian students.   The authors merged school longitudinal statistics with birth records to provide what they claim is 'the most comprehensive analysis to date of the educational experiences of immigrants in the USA public school system'.   Using the state of Florida's 'exceptionally rich data', they followed roughly two million students, including hundreds of thousands of students from immigrant households, examining disparities in achievement, misbehavior, truancy, academic persistence, and college readiness through grade levels and across generations.   They then examined whether the observable gaps in achievement were the result of poor quality schools or 'social' and economic differences.   The authors note that the unique Florida data-set, which matches student records with detailed birth certificate information for all children born between 1992 and 2002, allowed them to overcome limitations of prior literature.   One of the biggest advantages was that it gave them the ability to analyze results based on how students stated their ethnicity compared to how their parents self-identified.   Previous studies were not able to make this distinction, which made comparing immigrant groups across generations difficult.   Another advantage of the data is that Florida is one of the major destinations for immigrants.   With 85% of the current wave of immigrants coming from Latin America or Asia, the authors explain that the state 'can be regarded as a mirror for the future demographics of the public school system in the USA'.   The only noted drawback is that Mexicans are underrepresented in the state, so the authors stratified the data by country of origin to increase the external validity of their findings.   Their results run counter to the conventional wisdom of the immigrant experience.   Ozek and Figlio [found]: '[A] general pattern of deteriorating educational outcomes across successive immigrant generations.   In particular, we find that first generation immigrants -- beyond a transition period -- perform better in reading and math tests than do second generation immigrants, and second generation immigrants perform better than third generation immigrants...'...   Ozek and Fi8glio find 'evidence of educational aspirations dissipating across generations'.   Their analysis suggests that this educational decline is not attributed to the factors that are usually blamed: poverty, poor schools, limited English proficiency, and family instability.   When school conditions are held constant and the other factors see a relative improvement, the achievement and behavior of later generations still gets worse.   The findings, taken from a very large and fairly representative sample of current national immigration flows, run counter to the American myth of continual immigrant progress across generations..."

"A recent ruling by the USA Department of Commerce dramatically increased tariffs on some [Red Chinese] steel products, such as cold-rolled steel, which is used to make appliances, cars and electric motors.   Tariffs were raised by 500% on some other [Red Chinese] steel products.   [President Barack Hussein Obummer] and the major 2016 presidential aspirants, particularly Donald Trump, believe this measure will protect jobs in the USA steel industry.   There is no doubt that steel industry jobs will be saved.   But there is an ignorance and/or incapacity of being able to think beyond stage one when evaluating public policy.   Measures to protect steel-worker jobs pay attention to only the seen effects of public policy; they ignore the unseen.   In other words, they look at only the visible beneficiaries of public policy and ignore the invisible victims.   USA steel companies want to restrict steel imports so that they can sell more steel to [USA] companies and charge them higher prices.   That means more employment and greater profits for those in the steel industry.   We can think of those observations as the seen, or stage-one, effects of import restrictions.   Daniel R. Pearson has written a Forbes opinion article, which is titled 'The [USA And Red China] Are Both Wrong On Steel' and gets us beyond stage one.   In the May 23 piece, Pearson argues, 'The real cost of import restrictions is the harm they do to manufacturers of value-added products that use steel as an input.'   Primary metal manufacturing — which includes steel, copper, aluminum, magnesium, etc. -- added about $60G of value to the economy in 2014.   The steel-using manufacturers generated $990G of value for the economy; that's more than 16 times more.   Primary metal manufacturing employment was 400K, while steel-using manufacturers employed 6.5M people, also 16 times greater...   When congress enacts a miracle for one group of Americans, such as steel producers, it creates a non-miracle for another group, such as steel-using producers...."
