But this too posed practical & commercial problems that took years to solve. BASF went one way; Hoechst, which was entitled to use their process, took another path, once again based on research at the Zurich Poly. BASF got into production earlier (1897, as against 1904) but the Hoechst technique proved the better. In chemistry as in business, there is more than one way to skin a cat. Here as in so many other instances, the new technique spelled disaster for older methods & the people who lived by them. Within 3 years, BASF was producing as much indigo as could be got from 250K acres. The big losers in this instance were the Indians who grew & exported the natural product: 187K tonsin 1895-1896; 11K in 1913-1914. The price of the dye had been halved." --- David S. CNN said East Asian countries continue top the list overall, placing in 7 of the top 10 spots for science. Estonia, Finland, and Canada were the top ranking non-Asian countries... The study said about one in 10 students across OECD countries, and one in 4 in Singapore, performed at the highest level in science. More than 1 in 5 students fell short of baseline proficiency, noted the study. Only students in Canada, Estonia, Finland, Hong Kong (China), Japan, Macao (China), Singapore, and VietNam had at least 9 out of 10 [of the] students master the basics that every student should know before leaving school... USA students posted a math score of 470, below Singapore's top score of 540 and under the [aggregate] average for all countries. EB-5 program extension likely through April; what does it cost to create a job?
"EB-5... is supposed to be a job creation program, with each $500K investment allegedly creating 10 jobs. That would be $50K each. Meanwhile, in introducing a Japanese multi-billionaire, Masayoshi Son, Trump said that Son had promised to invest $50G in the United States and that it would create 50K jobs. Unless my math is wrong, that means that each new job would cost $1M. There's a 20:1 ratio here, and I suspect that Trump and Son are closer to reality than the out-of-date EB-5 law on what it takes to create a job. One of the many failings of the current EB-5 law is the way it allows estimation techniques on job creation to include both 'induced' and 'indirectly created' jobs to justify projects, thus supporting the otherwise minor job-creation achievements of the program. To suggest that $50K can create a continuing, full-time job in today's economy is a bit of folly that the EB-5 program has been nurturing for decades."

"His predecessors, both commissioners of the old Immigration and Naturalization Service, were retired 3-star Army general Joseph M. Swing (1954-1962) and retired 4-star Marine general Leonard F. Chapman ii (1973-1977). Both, like Kelly, were appointed by Republican presidents, Eisenhower and Nixon, respectively. Swing was a class-mate of Eisenhower's at West Point. He ran an enforcement program called 'Operation Wetback' that expelled large numbers of Mexican nationals from the Southwest. At a time when language was less inhibited than it is now, he converted some of the illegal alien farm workers into legal, non-immigrant ones, a process he termed 'drying out the wets'. I have a sense that there was not much due process in Operation Wetback, which the general managed with a Border Patrol of only a few more than 1K men. Chapman, who had been Commandant of the Marine Corps, was someone I met while at INS. I found him cold and stiff; others may have a different view. Chapman was reporting to then-attorney-general Elliott Richardson (who later resigned on principle during the Watergate years). Richardson persuaded the general to set up a small policy shop in INS that started to do some research on immigration policy and practices -- a commendable move..."

"Sick of being warned about anything and everything when it comes to the holiday season? So am I. That's why I'm ready to throw a lawn dart at a group called World Against Toys Causing Harm, or W.A.T.C.H. Every year since 1973, it has published a hyperventilating '10 Worst Toys' list at Christmastime. Now, maybe back in 1973, companies were still selling toy ovens that could smelt ore and chemistry sets that could actually blow things (that is, people) up. But in the 40-plus years since W.A.T.C.H. was started -- by a trial lawyer who wouldn't exactly suffer if he drummed up clients eager to sue toy-makers for negligence -- the regulations on toys and other kiddie products have multiplied to the point that if there's lead in the ink in the logo that's printed on the instep of a child's boot, which was exactly the issue in one infamous case, the item is recalled. Because what if a kid somehow hacked the boot into pieces, peeled out the instep and ate it?..."

"...maquiladoras, which cluster in industrial parks just south of the border in Nogales, Sonora. The plants were owned by foreign corporations -- American, Canadian, Japanese -- that were drawn to Mexico by $3.50-a-day wages, un-enforced environmental laws, toothless labor unions, and easy access to the USA market. Douglas's assistant, Ursula Obst, called and told me he was doing research for a novel that would be partially set in Nogales. The main character would be an American woman who inherited control of a corporation whose holdings included a maquiladora. Then Douglas came on the line to tell me about his heroine's humanitarian concerns. 'When she finds out how poorly the workers live, she decides to do something about it.', he said. Douglas said he'd like to fly over from Los Angeles in two weeks. He asked if I would show him the places Sandy and I had written about. I replied that I would be happy to. That was an understatement. I was thrilled. That weekend I drove to Nogales to set things up with Miguel Becerra, the leader of a squatter camp in which hundreds of workers lived with their families in flimsy shacks made from the wooden pallets and cardboard tossed out by such American giants as General Electric, Xerox, ITT, Rockwell, Memorex, and Kodak. I explained to Miguel that I would return the next weekend with an American movie star who was interested in Mexico. 'His name is Kirk Douglas.', I said. 'Do you know who he is?' Miguel's response is a favorite memory. Shaking his head in enthusiastic affirmation, he pushed a forefinger into his chin, replicating the famous Kirk Douglas dimple. 'Si, si!', he exclaimed, assuring me that in Mexico, Kirk Douglas was 'muy famoso'... _The Gift_... _The Ragman's Son_... Many maquiladora workers were drawn to industrialized border from the deeper poverty of southern Mexico. Some told me they were trying to save money so they could use the jobs as 'un trampolin' -- a trampoline -- to jump illegally into the United States. Mexican factory wages have improved since the time Kirk Douglas visited Nogales. But they remain stunningly low by American standards. That is why many more American corporations, under protections guaranteed by the North American Free Trade Agreement [NAFTA], have migrated to Mexico. Jobs that once sustained the blue-collar American middle class are now allowing Mexicans to survive. I hope someone as restless and determined as Kirk Douglas will write about that. In the mean-time, Happy Birthday, Kirk, and Muchisimas Gracias!"
