"...I served nearly 30 years as an immigration officer, more than 20 of those with the now-defunct Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), when it was undivided and officers in any single division had close contact and a clear view of the work of those in other divisions, often working side-by-side in remote corners of the world.   One of the deficits of the current state of affairs, post-creation of the Department of Homeland Security, is the horse-blinders that it has of necessity imposed on officers of the 3 different agencies that now conduct the immigration-related functions of the federal government: USCIS, Customs and Border Protection (USA CBP), and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (USA ICE).   Officers and agents in any one of them generally don't have any window into the functions of the others, and the threads that bind have started to unravel through separation...   the proof is not who got stopped, but who should have been and wasn't.   The [vetting/investigating/scrutinizing/screening] system across the whole range of immigration benefits has been lacking in recent years, if the disturbingly large number of terrorist attacks and near-misses is any gauge (and it must be since, after all, that is the reason all of these immigration agencies were lumped into a department called 'homeland security').   And in the particular case of refugees, we rely all too heavily on the United Nations [UN] to provide to us the list of applicants who will form the basis of our caseload.   For [vetting/investigating/scrutinizing/screening] to work, there has to be information to [vet/investigate/scrutinize/screen] against.   Where there is none, a blank slate is not necessarily evidence that an individual is a bona fide refugee, and yet that is the presumption that results from current processes.   Refugee officers are instructed not to interrogate or otherwise engage in hostile questioning; they are limited in the outside resources they are permitted to use in forming judgments on the outcome of a case; and, increasingly, they are recruited solely from a pool of individuals whose careers prior to entering government were dedicated to the resettlement of refugees, thus giving them a predisposition toward approving, rather than denying, claimants..."

These occupations are expected to add [only] about 488,500 new jobs, from about 3.9M jobs to about 4.4M jobs from 2014 to 2024, in part due to a greater emphasis on cloud computing, the collection and storage of big data, more everyday items becoming connected to the Internet in what is commonly referred to as the «Internet of things [to violate everyone's privacy]» and the continued demand for mobile computing.' Other tech giants that are struggling with morose revenues have also been shedding employees in the USA, rather than hiring... tech companies or 'IT' departments at non-tech companies are laying off Americans and replace them with H-1B workers, often requiring the to-be-laid-off Americans to train their foreign successors. Pretty good, but Morris has his Texas and Mexico history a bit off.   Mexico enticed settlers to northern Mexico because they wanted more production and more tax base.   In exchange, they offered generous homesteading, respect for property rights, contracts, and individual liberty.   But the Mexican historical/cultural background made fulfilling such agreements impossible.   One of the very leaders of the somewhat more classical liberal change-over soon became the leader of an authoritarian, hierarchical change-over, and the agreements were broken.   That was when the new Mexican citizens from the USA rebelled (and eventually got their acts together well enough to succeed over 2 decades later).   Jewish aliyah to Israel is also a bad example.   Though out of power since at least 70CE, there was a continuous Jewish presence in Israel, with schools, synagogues, etc...jgo

The "deal" was bogus as it was being signed.   It certainly did nothing to stop or slow Iran's development of nuclear weapons and delivery systems, and certainly has done much to accelerate them.   It was not ratified by two-thirds of the USA senate, so it is not a treaty binding the USA, either.   And even if you accept the "executive agreement" non-sense, once the executive is gone, so is the agreement.   The issue now is how best to stop Iran and its aim to destroy the USA and Israel, and Sunni Muslims...jgo

"...The Justice Department provided the sub-committee with a list of 580 people who were convicted -- not just arrested, but tried and convicted -- of terror-related offenses between 2001 Sept. 11 and 2014 Dec. 31.   The sub-committee investigated further and found that at least 380 of the 580 were foreign-born and that an additional 129 were of unknown origin.   Of the 380, there were representatives -- at least 60 -- from all of the countries on the Trump executive order list.   And with 129 unknowns, there might be more, as well.   In addition, since the senate list was compiled, there have been others involved in terrorism in the United States from the seven countries.   One highly publicized example was the case of Abdul Artan, a Somali refugee who last November wounded 11 people with a machete during an attack on the campus of Ohio State University.   In fairness to judge Robart, Artan was shot and killed by police -- not arrested -- so perhaps the judge didn't count him [though he is another example of the lack of successful background investigations and appropriate action by DoS and DHS barring terrorists from entering the USA, and failure of local police and DHS personnel from detecting his intentions, though they had been published months before in an interview].   In a report Monday, the Associated Press, relying on the research of University of North Carolina professor Charles Kurzman, reported that '23% of Muslim Americans involved with extremist plots since Sept. 11 had family backgrounds from the 7 countries'..."

"When you deal with the subject of immigration over an extended period of time, as I have, one of the uncomfortable realities you must contend with is the nature of most immigration-related legislation.     Strip away the fancy bill names, get down into the guts of the language, and you discover that it is all about catering to special interests: big business, big agriculture, this or that group of aliens.     Once in a while, it serves (or purports to serve) sweeping national security purposes.     But almost never does it serve the interests of the bedrock of our nation: all of the average Joes and average Janes out there who are working hard, often struggling to get by, both parents in a family unit employed if they can find the work, sometimes at more than one job each because the pay or benefits are inadequate.     I'm happy to report that senators Tom Cotton (R-AR) and David Perdue (R-GA) have introduced a bill in the Senate called the Reforming American Immigration for Strong Employment (RAISE) Act that unashamedly puts the interests of the American people front and center.     To mention just a few items that the bill features: The bill will take measured steps to reduce, over a period of several years, legal immigration to levels more in line with historic norms than the million-plus our country has been absorbing annually for several years now.     This is good for the wages of average Americans, and good for the national interest because it ensures not only that the arriving immigrants have a better chance at assimilation and integration into the national polity, but also that local governments, schools, and social safety nets are better poised to absorb them.     One of the ways in which it whittles down the numbers is by eliminating certain categories of chain migration that make little sense, such as visa categories for extended family members (as opposed to the nuclear family).     The bill also eliminates the absurd and ill-considered visa lottery, a system that is the immigration equivalent of casting dollars into the wind, using visas instead.     And it amends the cap on 'refugee' admissions and adjustments of status, which under the [Obummer regime] reached unheard-of levels.     This too is welcome given the disturbing frequency with which we have seen questions raised about the quality of [vetting/investigating/scrutinizing/screening], not to mention the positive proofs from time to time of refugees or their children becoming involved in terrorism or attempting to go abroad to join violent jihadist groups like al-Shabaab and ISIL/ ISIS/ Daesh/ IS/ caliphate.     Senator Jeff Sessions once spoke of a 'humble populism' that should underlie immigration legislation.     While the word populism may be in bad odor in some quarters, I think of this concept of humble populism as a different proposition; it is simply something that recognizes the importance of the increasingly forgotten men and women who make up our country, including those with immigrant roots, and who only want to be able to leave for their children the chance for a better life, as their parents did for them.     It seems to me that senators Perdue and Cotton have recognized that fact.     The RAISE Act stands as a promise to the American people; let us hope that their colleagues act promptly and positively to move this bill to the House for action."

The fact is that the leftists have established crony socialist taps on tax-victim funds, and many wealthy financial backers, who have thousands of "community organizers" on a steady pay-roll, and hundreds of thousands of useful idiots all lined up and in their data-bases, ready to be "mobilized".   Classical liberals, in contrast, are independent.   They may make a small contribution when family finances allow, and, given enough notice, may be able to get to a rally if it seems well worthwhile.   But they don't have a fleet of buses and vans and drivers lined up, with pick-up locations and routes planned.   Unlike the left, they don't own bull-horns and screen printing operations, though they might have some markers and a couple pieces of corrugated card-board, and masks.   They might send an e-mail message to a few friends and relatives, or a note trough the snail.   But it would be a disruption, and cost them money they do not have to spare to do much more, and they consider those leftist rioters to be rude even when they are not criminal, so shun the thought of confronting them.
