Ted Cruz continues doing the people's work in the senate
"While other major presidential candidates engage in puerile arguments about the size of hands and other body parts, or obfuscate their positions, or do outright flip-flop-flips in their support/opposition/support for foreign worker programs that rob Americans of their jobs, senator Ted Cruz is quietly going about the work of the people and continues to submit bills for consideration by the senate, even as he campaigns nationwide.   It's quite impressive.     I analyzed one of them recently on behalf of the Center, S2538, the 'ICE Agent Support Act of 2016', cosponsored with senator Jeff Sessions.   The bill has some limitations, but is a good starting place and an admirable show of support for the beleaguered agents of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).     Compare Cruz's support for agents doing the hard job of attempting to enforce immigration law in the interior of the United States, which is nigh unto impossible in this administration, with that of Sen.   Marco Rubio, who not only has never fully renounced or believably explained his support for the abysmal Gang of Eight amnesty bill, but has despicably treated ICE union officials (the only ones able to speak the truth these days without direct and immediate retribution from their Washington bosses, but still at risk to their personal careers) with a contempt they don't deserve.   This says volumes about his real beliefs on immigration enforcement, as if we didn't already know.     Besides the ICE agent support bill, Cruz is also the author of an important but little-remarked bill to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization, originally introduced in November of last year.   Sadly, govtrack.us only gives it a 2 percent chance of passage.   This is beyond unfortunate.   The Muslim Brotherhood is, and has been since its founding, a font from which has flowed a never-ending stream of pan-Arabic Islamic extremists whose goal is jihad and global religious domination.   It is significant that, as is noted right in the text of the bill, some of the most conservative Islamic nations in the world have themselves banned the Brotherhood and designated it a terrorist organization.   If they recognize the threat the organization poses, how is it that we don't?   Cruz's own past stances on immigration have not been without flaw; he, too, at one time supported massive and unjustifiable increases in ongoing 'H' visa programs that are consistently used as end-arounds by corporate bigwigs to legally obtain cheap labor.   Would he again show such enthusiasm if elected president?   We can't know for sure; hopefully not.   Perhaps he's actually come to realize how injurious they are to American workers and how instrumental they can be in keeping an economy stagnant, in the same way that third-world economies just seem to slump along.   It's admirable that Cruz takes his responsibilities so seriously that he continues to do his job in the senate even while campaigning, unlike Rubio, who not only seldom introduces bills, having been spooked since the Gang of Eight debacle, but also doesn't even show up to work in order to vote on other senators' bills -- perhaps out of fear that someone will actually be able to suss out his core views from those votes.   (The one notable exception is Rubio's I-Squared Act, which would hugely increase immigration and guestworker programs.)   This inevitably leads one to ask:   Does he have any core values?   If so, why isn't he willing to show us what they are through something as simple as fulfilling his senatorial voting responsibilities?   At least Cruz appears to have read his own campaign platform on controlling immigration, both legal and illegal.   At this point, that's several steps above what we see from the others."

money trail leads back from USA-Mexico border to Middle East
"Officials launched the probe shortly after 6 men -- 1 from Afghanistan and 5 from Pakistan -- were arrested in Patagonia, a quaint ranching town that sits 20 miles north of Nogales, on 2015 Nov. 17.   Judicial Watch investigated the matter as part of an ongoing probe on the dire national-security issues created by the notoriously porous southern border.   Special-agent Kurt Remus in the FBI's Phoenix headquarters told JW that the agency's Joint Terrorism Task Forces vetted and interviewed the 6 men and determined that there were 'no obvious signs of terrorism' so they were returned to the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement or USAICE.   But a few days later, in a story first reported by JW, 5 young Middle Eastern men were apprehended in the nearby Arizona town of Amado, which sits about 30 miles from the Mexican border.   Two of the Middle Eastern men were carrying stainless-steel cylinders in back-packs, law enforcement and other sources told JW, alarming Border Patrol officials enough to call the Department of Homeland Security for back-up.   Only 3 of the men's names were entered in the Border Patrol's E3 reporting system, which is used by the agency to track apprehensions, detention hearings and removals of illegal immigrants.   E3 also collects and transmits biographic and biometric data including finger-prints for identification and verification of individuals encountered at the border.   The other 2 men were listed as 'unknown subjects', which is unheard of, according to a JW federal law enforcement source.   'In all my years I've never seen that before.', a veteran federal law enforcement agent told JW..."

an alarming trend sweeping the USA is threatening our survival
"...The current set of problems in America exists primarily from the usurpation of power at the national level because of the abdication of personal responsibility at the local level.   We are experiencing -- because we (the public) have allowed it -- massive changes within our society and the societal mores on which the American republic rests.   We must learn what that means, how to survive it and that traditional values can still be taught in an unfriendly and anti-morality society.   A free society without moral underpinnings cannot continue to survive, but will, in fact, as with any structure that lacks foundational support, implode.   Ask ancient Rome.   Something frightening is happening in America today -- more and more the traditional foundations are being destroyed.   People without moorings (a stable traditional family, a sense of personal self-worth and concrete moral values) are being swept away by a new wave.   A new USA government report shows huge increases in the incidences of domestic violence, rape and sexual assault, up 42% and 25% respectively.   According to the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, or FIRE, on college campuses, 'Christian groups are considered religious, whereas Muslim or Hindu groups are considered cultural.'   We see this regularly on high-school and college campuses, as well as in recent attacks on a national holiday, Christmas..."

government of India has initiated complaint to WTO against the USA claiming our virtually non-existent standards are too tough, and our vastly excessive student, exchange, guest-work and green-card visas are not excessive enough to please them
"Here's a rich one: India is initiating a dispute with the USA in the World Trade Organization (WTO) alleging that the raising of fees for participation in certain guest-worker programs constitutes 'discrimination' and puts those foreign temporary workers on a lesser footing than similarly situated American workers.   The basis of the impending action is this: In December, as part of the [omnibus over-spending bill], congress doubled the fees paid by employers to sponsor guest-workers in the controversial H-1B and L categories, used to bring in more than 200K new guest-workers each year.   The Indians dispute this as inherently discriminatory.   Can you imagine?   How shocking that American workers should be given preference over intended guest-workers who aren't even here yet [or are studying alongside USA citizen students in USA colleges and universities], and that the guest-workers and middle-man shell companies that supply these workers to American corporations must face rising immigration and visa-issuance related fees.   Mockery aside, if anyone thinks that unbridled guest-worker programs are a good idea, consider the entire concept that a foreign nation can complain to a supranational body that another sovereign nation favors its own citizens and lawful residents in the job market.   This can only happen when access to such programs has become so routine and broad-based for the nationals of the foreign state -- and they have been during [the last 4 presidential administrations] -- that they come to think it a matter of right.   The sector of work involved in this dispute is the information technology industry, which has become the subject of much recent debate in this country, given the demands of tech giants for plentiful and ready access to cheap foreign labor, alleging as they do that there aren't enough USA workers to do the jobs.   This despite evidence at Disney and elsewhere that Americans are routinely fired and forced to train their foreign replacements, even though there are [2-3 times] as many American technology degree holders as jobs available [and many more USA citizen STEM professionals who have repeatedly shown that they are able and willing to do the work without academic credentials].   And that doesn't even take into consideration the significant number of companies that have 'off-shored' technology work, such as help desks and call centers, to places such as the Philippines and India, taking thousands of previously American jobs with them.   Ironically, drop-outs from the job market lead [some] to a false sense of security in the stability of the economy, because [to the ignorant] they make the unemployment figures look substantially lower than reality.   This is because when they quit looking, they [are counted as not in the labor force, but as discouraged or marginal labor force participants because they are not employed, but not actively seeking employment].   And, sadly, this in turn continues to drive the bogus narrative cycle that 'free trade' (often commingled with or [honestly recognized] as cheap labor) is a vast boon to [non-Americans].   This WTO action by India leads us to another troubling arena: that of trade partnerships and agreements generally.   One is reminded of the recent unabashed steam-rolling of congress by the [Obummer regime to refuse to comply with the USA constitution] to obtain its concurrence for the Trans-Pacific [Trade] Partnership (TPP), replete with secret and shady side agreements that appear to even further weaken the capacity of American workers to obtain decent, gainful employment in their own country.   Proponents of TPP (who also happen to be some of the most ardent proponents of increasing the number of guestworkers) constantly deny that trade agreements undermine congressional control of immigration and visa programs.   Yet this new effort by India to force the repeal of modest new rules enacted by congress clearly demonstrates just how false those claims were.   In the WTO case, if the body of international trade arbiters rules in favor of India, then we will have to change our laws to conform to international expectations, or [tell them to stuff it, as weshould have done a very long time ago], and this unaccountable international tribunal effectively will have control over our immigration laws.   One wonders what rights the [Democrat regime] and Republican congress, which knuckled under shamelessly in the matter of the TPP, have given foreign countries to contest our laws and regulations in obscure international organizations whose interests will not, can never, match up with those of our unemployed and underemployed workers, many of whom, facing seemingly insurmountable odds at getting decent employment, have dropped out of the job market completely.   The next step in the dispute is that the United States has 10 days to respond, and if the USA and India cannot come to an agreement, then it goes to the WTO dispute resolution tribunal [which will, of course, side against the USA regardless of the facts, just as they favored steel dumping by Red China, poisonous pet food from Red China, against honest labeling of food-stuffs...].   The question is, how hard will the [Obummer regime] try to defend the rules imposed by congress?   Its track record is not at all encouraging, and it's unlikely that the next Democrat administration will be any different; certainly not if former Secretary of State [Hitlery Rotten Clinton] were to be elected."

Donald Trump has a clear record on EB-5 visas; Clinton's brother also profits from EB-5
"The EB-5 immigrant investor program is now playing a minor role in the presidential primaries; the two apparent leaders, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, have ties to the program, though the other four do not, at least not yet.   This became clear with the news that one of The Donald's real estate deals, involving his name on an elegant 50-story apartment building in the once distinctly non-elegant Jersey City, will be one-quarter funded by EB-5 money.   Those who will live on the Hudson River side of the Trump Bay Street will have excellent views of the Manhattan sky-line.   A Bloomberg News story indicated that roughly $12M will be derived from the EB-5 visas, presumably from wealthy [Red Chinese] aliens.   This is one of those Trump license arrangements in which he potentially profits from the deal, but does not necessarily have either an investment stake or managerial control of it.   I have not read anything about his policy position on EB-5, nor have I seen anything about Hillary Clinton's position.   But in her case, there are direct ties between her brother, Anthony Rodham, and the program.   As CIS has reported in the past, Rodham is an officer of the regional center that raised money for the since-collapsed Greentech proposal to build energy-efficient golf carts; at one time the project also involved Terry McAuliffe, before he became a candidate for Virginia's governorship.   Senators Bernie Sanders, Marco Rubio, and Ted Cruz -- again to my knowledge -- have not discussed EB-5 in the campaign; nor has Governor John Kasich.   Sanders, who is famously critical of the nation's 1 percent, represents one of the few states in the union in which EB-5 moneys have gone to honest-to-God poor rural areas; in this case in the Northeast Kingdom of northern Vermont.   That the investments went there is the result of the work of the other senator from the state, Pat Leahy (D), during his tour of duty as the chairman of the senate Judiciary committee.   (EB-5 money routinely goes to glittering downtown areas in America's big cities.)   Speaking of Sanders, an earlier blog of mine was accurate, but incomplete about his immigration policy positions.   Yes, he voted for the Gang of Eight's [reprehensible immigration law perversion bill S744], as I wrote earlier, but he also has been highly critical of the H-1B program.   For more on that see here."

an open letter to Customs & Border Protection commissioner R. Gil Kerlikowske
"A few days ago, reacting to in-depth critiques from knowledgeable Border Patrol agents (BPAs) who happen also to be officials of the union that represents BPAs -- see, for example, here and here -- Gil Kerlikowske, commissioner of the Border Patrol's parent agency, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) had this to say, according to the Washington DC Times:   'Well if you really don't want to follow the directions of your [oath-breaking, USA constitution hating, constitution violating, USA law hating, USA law violating inferiors], including the president of the USA and the commissioner of Customs and Border Protection, then you really do need to [stop pussyfooting, and impeach us, and convict us, and throw us in prison].'     [Or at least that is what he should have written if he were honest.]     Kerlikowske's comments have BPAs and ICE agents all over the country, active-duty and retired, in a furor.   As one succinctly mocked, 'Those lazy agents should just say they were following orders.   It worked at Nuremberg, right?'   My response is an open letter to the CBP Commissioner:   Dear Commissioner Kerlikowske,   Your public comments suggesting that loyal, dedicated agents committed to the best interests of the USA should quit, rather than air their deep concerns over the legitimacy of the orders they are receiving, put your own judgment into question.     Unlike you, who have followed the political winds from job to job to pursue career advancement, they have committed themselves to a professional life of service in one of the most difficult and demanding law enforcement jobs in the country.     Unlike you, who serve in the comfort of the halls of power in Washington, DC, they are on the 'sharp end of the spear', serving in a dirty, dusty, and often extremely dangerous border environment.   For many of them, this follows honorable service in our armed forces in equally dangerous locations.   Can you say as much?   And unlike you, they know full well that when they speak publicly, even though they are exercising their constitutional First Amendment rights, they are putting their own career advancement in jeopardy given the propensity of this administration to muzzle and punish the outspoken, and yet they continue to do so in the common good.     In sum, Mr. Kerlikowske, if there is a question of someone resigning, I believe I know who that should be, and I suspect the majority of [USA citizens] do too -- and it isn't those patrol agents."

Ohio lost 112,500 jobs in 2015 to trade with Trans-Pacific Partnership countries
Olivera Perkins: Cleveland OH Plain Dealer
Robert E. Scott & Elizabeth Glass: EPI: TPP, currency manipulation (the race to devalue), and jobs: USA trade deficit with the TPP countries cost 2M jobs in 2015, with job losses in every state
"The 2M jobs lost due to the USA goods trade deficit with TPP member countries in 2015 included 418,900 direct jobs in commodity and manufacturing industries that competed with unfairly traded goods from TPP member countries.   The currency-manipulation-fueled trade deficit with TPP countries in 2015 was also responsible for the loss of 847,200 indirect jobs in supplier industries, and an additional 759,700 're-spending' jobs.   These lost respending jobs are jobs that -- in a USA economy still suffering from low demand -- would have been supported by the wages of workers who would have had jobs were trade with the TPP member countries balanced.   The USA trade deficit with TPP member countries in 2015 cost 1,057,200 manufacturing jobs (52.2% of the jobs lost due to the USA trade deficit with TPP member countries).   Within manufacturing, by far the largest losses occurred in motor vehicles and parts, which lost 738,300 jobs (36.4% of total jobs lost).   Other manufacturing industries with large losses include apparel (181,900 jobs lost or displaced, equal to 9% of total jobs lost) and computer and electronic parts (163,900 jobs, or 8.1%).   The USA trade deficit with TPP member countries was also responsible for significant job losses outside of manufacturing in 2015.   Industries that lost jobs include health care and social assistance (204,200 jobs, 10.1%); retail trade (142,800 jobs, 7%); accommodation and food services (101,800 jobs, 5%); finance and insurance (42,700 jobs, 2.1%); agricultural industries (41,600 jobs, 2.1%), and education services (37,300 jobs, 1.8%)..."

random thoughts on current events
"...Some countries in Europe have sealed their borders against refugees from the Middle East, as the Soviet Union once sealed its borders against people getting in or getting out.   But somehow it is said by some to be impossible to seal our border with Mexico.   When the Whigs could not get their act together on the crucial issue of their day -- slavery -- that led some Whigs to leave the party and form the Republican party, with Lincoln as its candidate for president.   Today's Republican party has repeatedly failed to get its act together on immigration.   That has produced the current divisiveness that may threaten them with the fate of the Whigs.   Historians of the future, when they look back on our times, may be completely baffled when trying to understand how Western civilization welcomed vast numbers of people hostile to the fundamental values of Western civilization, people who had been taught that they have a right to kill those who do not share their beliefs."

DHS comforts the comfortable with "known employer" initiative
"The Department of Homeland Security, under the guise of governmental efficiency, has made another move to comfort the most comfortable among us in its new 'Known Employer' gambit.   It has chosen 5 (apparently) model employers and will make it much easier for them to hire foreign workers in the next year.   If this pilot program works as planned it will be open to many more employers in the future.   Why not focus all of the executive and legal hours spent on this initiative instead on using them to figure out a model way to prevent exploitation of foreign and domestic workers among the, say, bottom 5% of the employers of alien workers?   The answer is that this allegedly Democratic administration is more interested in helping the 1% at the top of the economic pile make more money out of immigration than it is in helping either exploited foreign workers, or the American ones they displace.   It prefers to ignore the afflicted while comforting fat-cat employers.   The Details.   The elite (pilot) employers, and the number of H-1Bs they applied for in the years 2011-2014 are:   Citigroup, Inc.: 2,618;   Ernst & Young LLP, one of the big four accounting firms: 10,328;   Kiewit Corporation, a large construction firm with ties to Warren Buffet: 37;   Schaeffler Group USA, Inc., a German-owned manufacturing firm: 94; and   Siemens Corporation, founded some years ago in the Kingdom of Prussia, is in the health and engineering fields: 259.   These firms were presumably selected very carefully and are far from a random sample of the foreign-worker-using corporations.   Four of them, all but Schaeffler, have a record of hiring significant numbers of green card holders as well as the H-1Bs.   The average H-1B salary figures on Myvisajobs.com for 2015 were between $92,297 (E&Y) and $109,327 (Citi) for four of them, with Schaeffler again being the outlier at $73,629.   The immigration categories covered by the pilot plan include the rarely used (outside of academia) group of outstanding professors or researchers and the more common multi-national executives, both in the first of the employment-based green-card categories (EB-1).   More significant numerically are nonimmigrant programs: the H-1B category for college grads; L-1A and L-1B, for managers and professionals working for multi-national firms; and TN, for Canadians and Mexican H-1B types under NAFTA.   The expedited handling of applications for all of these categories for the pilot firms will mean, among other things, according to DHS:   'A USCIS officer will not need to review those approved employer eligibility requirements unless the facts have changed since the time USCIS made its predetermination or there are indications of fraud or material misrepresentation.'..."

another displaced USA citizen STEM professional has come forward: there is no way I can compete with cheap, young, pliant, low-skilled foreign guest-workers with questionable ethics
"...H-1B visa.   'We were notified that we were going to be out-sourced -- never really got a good explanation of what the reason was.', the Abbott Laboratories employee told Laura Ingraham on her radio show.   'Just tidbits here and there, mostly due to cost savings.'   The global health-care giant is laying off 180 'IT' workers after signing a contract with an India-based 'IT' services firm [i.e. cross-border bodyshop].   The employee, who wished to remain anonymous for legal reasons, was recently told he would be out of a job as of April 22.   'My prospects for the future aren't very bright, with the trend going on with all companies doing this, the age that I have.', he said.   'There's not too many places where I can go, and it's very hard to compete when it's not a level playing field in this game called globalization.   There's no way I can compete with someone outside the country.'   Disney, Southern California Edison and other companies across the country have similarly laid off 'IT' workers and replaced them with foreign workers, often on H-1B visas.   Businesses consistently lobby for access to more of these guest workers on the grounds there is a shortage of American tech workers, although in many cases American workers report being forced to train their foreign replacement...   'I've heard it all before.', the employee told Ingraham, when asked about the candidates promising to fix the H-1B problem.   'Who knows what's going to happen once they enter office.   Are they going to do anything about it, or is it just for votes?   I have no idea.', he continued.   'My trust level in government right now is pretty low.'..."

That Which Is Seen and That Which Is Not Seen
Jewish World Review
World Net Daily
"...A concrete example was the [Shrub regime's] 8% to 30% tariffs in 2002 on several types of imported steel.   They were levied in an effort to protect jobs in the ailing USA steel industry [and penalize Red China for dumping].   Those tariffs caused the domestic price for some steel products, such as hot-rolled steel, to rise by as much as 40%.   The clear beneficiaries of the steel tariffs were steel industry executives and stockholders and the 1,700 or so steelworkers whose jobs were saved.   But there is no such thing as a free lunch or a something-for-nothing machine.   Whenever there is a benefit of doing something, there is a guaranteed cost.   A study by the Peterson Institute for International Economics, predicted that saving those 1,700 jobs in the steel industry would cost American consumers $800K per job, in the form of higher prices.   That's just the monetary side of the picture.   According to a study commissioned by the Consuming Industries Trade Action Coalition, steel-using industries -- such as the USA auto industry, its suppliers, heavy construction equipment manufacturers and others -- were harmed by higher steel prices.   It is estimated that the steel tariffs caused at least 4,500 job losses in no fewer than 16 states, with over 19K jobs lost in California, 16K in Texas and about 10K each in Ohio, Michigan and Illinois.   In other words, industries that use steel were forced to pay higher prices, causing them to have to raise prices on what they produced.   As a result, they became less competitive in both domestic and international markets and thus had to lay off workers.   Tariff policy beneficiaries are always seen, but its victims are mostly unseen..."

"...Critics point out police investigators in Bend, Oregon, said one FBI agent was suspected of lying about the shooting.   And Finicum's supporters suspect four other agents may have helped cover up misbehavior.   'They shot my husband, they left him lying in the snowbank -- no medical assistance, no charges, no arraignment, no preliminary hearing, no indictment, and no trial by a jury -- and should they just walk free?   It just is not right.', Jeanette Finicum said in a statement released only hours after the FBI and Oregon state police presented their arguments.   'The consolation I have is that hundreds of thousands of Americans have seen and know the truth and believe as I do that my husband was murdered intentionally, deliberately and with malice.', she said.   'My lawyer has assured me that we will seek justice in a different court, under different circumstances -- and I look forward to the day when these men [along with Lon Horiuchi, Bill & Hitlery Clinton...] do face a jury that is unbiased enough to return a fair verdict.'...   A number of people have been kept in solitary confinement since their arrests for the standoff on charges ranging from impeding officers to intimidation and threats.   When stopped, Finicum shouted at officers: 'I'm going to go meet the sheriff.   Do as you damn well please.'...   Video shows him getting out his vehicle and taking a few steps.   He apparently raises his hands before multiple shots are fired..."

"Too little reliance is to be had on a steady and certain course of commerce with the countries of Europe to permit us to depend more on that than we cannot avoid.   Our best interest would be to employ our principal labor in agriculture, because to the profits of labor, which is dear, this adds the profits of our lands, which are cheap.   But the risk of hanging our prosperity on the fluctuating counsels and caprices of others renders it wise in us to turn seriously to manufactures, and if Europe will not let us carry our provisions to their manufactures, we must endeavor to bring their manufactures to our provision." --- Thomas Jefferson 1791 to David Humphreys. _The Writings of Thomas Jefferson_ (edited by Paul Leicester Ford) vol5 pg344

confusion follows Donald Trump's seeming flip-flop on key visa issue
"...people who follow immigration closely were stunned Thursday night when Trump, at the Fox News debate here in Detroit, announced that he has changed his position on one key element of the immigration debate -- the use of H-1B visas to bring [cheap, young, pliant, low-skilled STEM labor with flexible ethics] into the USA.   In the [past] Trump focused on abuses in the system, in which some big companies have been caught using H-1Bs to bring in foreign workers, force American employees to train their own replacements, and then pay the foreign worker less than the American had made -- all to do mostly routine jobs in the tech industry.   At his recent rally in Alabama -- the one in which Trump received the endorsement of senator Jeff Sessions, congress' strongest voice against expanding the troubled H-1B program -- Trump also won the endorsement of some American workers who were victims of H-1B abuse at Disney.   'The fact is that Americans are losing their jobs to foreigners.', one of the laid-off workers told the crowd...   'I've heard from enough tech workers displaced by H-1Bs that Trump's apparent answer very dispiriting.', tweeted the writer Mickey Kaus...   Krikorian, head of the Center for Immigration Studies, which favors reducing levels of immigration into the USA, was not impressed...   'His embrace of foreign tech workers is particularly shocking given that just days ago he featured American workers replaced by Disney at one of his rallies.'...'Trump said in a clarification statement sent to reporters about an hour after the debate ended.   'The H-1B program [as now used and abused] is neither high-skilled nor immigration: these are temporary foreign workers, imported from abroad, for the explicit purpose of substituting for American workers at lower pay.   I remain totally committed to eliminating rampant, widespread H-1B abuse and ending outrageous practices such as those that occurred at Disney in Florida when Americans were forced to train their foreign replacements.   I will end forever the use of the H-1B as a cheap labor program, and institute an absolute requirement to hire American workers first for every visa and immigration program.   No exceptions.'..."

RINO losership's desperation tactics
"...The desperation of the Republican establishment comes from the fact that the 2 biggest vote-getters in the Republican primaries -- Donald Trump and Ted Cruz -- are people they do not want to be the Republican candidate for president of the USA...   Even more important, while Trump's style and substance may endear him to his followers, both that style and that substance are deeply offensive to [leftists and RINOs]...   Senator Cruz has been fighting against the Republican ['establishment'/ 'losership'/ 'elite'] for years before Trump decided to become a candidate.   Nor does he have Trump's [and Nelson Rockefeller's, and Bob Dole's, and Mittens Romney's, and John McCain's, and Lindsey Grahamnesty's, and Mitch McConnell's, and John Boehner's, and Paul Ryan's] 'flexibility'...   The kinds of [rotten] candidates the Republican ['establishment'/ 'losership'/ 'elite'] has chosen -- from Romney and McCain in recent times, all the way back to Thomas E. Dewey in 1948 [and Wendell Wilkie in 1940] -- have had an almost unbroken record of losing, even to Democrats who were initially unknown (Carter, Clinton) or unpopular ([Obummer], Truman) [all of whom wreaked deep damage against the USA]."

MIT: hot-wiring brains to cure depression
"...He injects a modified, light-sensitive gene into those happy-memory cells, then uses fiber optics to switch on the memories with a stream of blue light.   The depressed mice perk up in seconds.   When he turns the light off, their lethargy rapidly returns.   Another flip of the switch, and they're active again...   Tonegawa's approach in creating and manipulating memory cells has drawn praise from a normally staid academic community...   the stress response of the amygdala, an almond-shaped structure in the brain that is linked to fear and pleasure, can predict a person's vulnerability to developing depression as much as four years into the future...   11 genetic blood markers that distinguished teenagers who were depressed from those who weren't...   markers in RNA -- the messengers that carry out the DNA's instructions [to manufacture proteins and enzymes and microtubules] -- to develop a blood test for depression in adults that would confirm a physiological basis for patients' symptoms...   SSRIs target the neurochemicals that carry information between neurons in the brain, but no one knows exactly how or why they work, and because the medications can't lock in on specific neurons or regions of gray matter, they are more blunt instrument than precision tool...   the physical traces of memories are not stored in the synapses, or connections, between cells, as previously thought, but in discrete circuits of cells, called memory engrams.   Tonegawa then upended the common belief that the loss of long-term memory, which can result from a brain injury or disease such as Alzheimer's, is not necessarily the result of damaged memory cells but of a damaged memory-retrieval system...   'Depressed patients, they don't seek pleasure.   That's a hallmark of depression.   Enjoyable experiences don't register anymore.', he said...   His underlying hypothesis was that in depression, 'deeper areas are overly firing', especially the emotion-driving amygdala, which overwhelm more superficial areas in the front of the brain that normally help control or inhibit that excessive activity.   Cassano's idea was to target those sluggish neurons close to the surface where mitochondria, the power sources of cells, could convert the near-infrared light into chemical energy.   More chemical energy would mean more neuronal growth and repair, and more and better-functioning neurons in the prefrontal cortex would mean better control over the hyperactive amygdala.

what would your grand-mother say?
"...But even as the cultural tide strives to wash away the boundaries between illusion and reality, every once in awhile the purveyors of fantasy stumble on to the truth, even if it is by accident.   One of the most substantive films of recent years is 'The Intern', in which Robert DeNiro plays a 70-year-old widower who finds himself working for an edgy, high-tech start-up and turns the business on its head with his old-fashioned work ethic and his traditional, common sense values.   Without sermonics or sentimentality, the film gives a nod to follow-your-dream idealism while simultaneously deflating the myth that you can have it all.   It's clever, it's clean, and it carries you along effortlessly, leaving you happy and hopeful that loyalty, self-discipline, personal responsibility, and the wisdom of experience may not be completely forgotten values after all.   It also reminds us that the conventions of the past often provide the best foundation for a successful future."

"The wise man is the detached man.   Our convictions, our outlook, the whole makeup of our thinking, which we cannot help bringing to the decision of every question, is the creature of our past; and into our past have been woven all sorts of frustrated ambitions with their envies, and of hopes of preferment with their corruptions, which, long since forgotten, determine our conclusions.   A wise man is one exempt from the handicap of such a past; he is a runner stripped for the race; he can weigh the conflicting factors of his problem without always finding himself in one scale or the other." --- Learned Hand 1938 in eulogy of Benjamin Cardozo

the de facto DHS motto: we don't try harder; as a matter of fact we strive not to strive
"Department of Homeland Security (DHS) secretary Jeh Johnson told the senate Judiciary committee at a hearing this week that 'there's only so much border security you can accomplish' -- not 'we're going to try harder', not 'we have a plan and a strategy that we'll be rolling out', nothing.   It was a surprisingly lackadaisical expression of disinterest from the man charged with securing the nation's borders.   Could it be that the [Obummer regime], nearing the end of its second term, doesn't even have the energy left to continue trying to perpetuate the myth that it is tough on protecting our frontiers from illegal intruders?   Johnson was addressing the fact that the dramatic rise in the numbers of unaccompanied minors and at least partial family units that began in 2014 not only hasn't slowed down, but is on pace to exceed the previous surge numbers that disturbed so many Americans -- something the [Obummer regime] has excelled in keeping from the public eye by a number of means, including intimidation of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents to discourage them speaking out, as well as increased sophistication in the way it rapidly disperses the illegal crossers away from border areas and into the interior, often without being served notices to appear before immigration judges in removal proceedings..."

"white" poverty and me
Washington DC Times
"...The left talks a lot about poverty, but when it comes to programs and ideas to help people climb out of poverty their only solution is to spend more money.   If money alone were enough to extricate people from poverty and help them sustain themselves with a job and a strong family, then the more than $1T spent on anti-poverty programs since the Great Society was launched by President Johnson in 1964 would have reduced the number of poor people in America.   And yet, the poverty rate changes very little.   A rational person might conclude that spending more money on programs that have failed to achieve their stated goals is not the right answer.   In April and May of 1964, president Johnson and the first lady, Lady Bird Johnson, toured the Appalachian states.   After their visit he vowed to wipe out poverty.   He didn't and his successors haven't either.   What do I, a now 'prosperous' white guy, know about poverty?   In 1965, I was a private first class in the U.S. Army, working at Armed Forces Radio in New York City for the astronomical wage of $99 a month.   All of us enlisted men had second jobs to make ends meet.   Mine was as an engineer at WOR-TV.   I had no car, the subway was 10 cents (soon to jump to 15 cents, producing cries from the left that it would harm the poor).   I had no savings and as one payday approached I had only a dime in my pocket for a one-way trip to work.   Had the paycheck not arrived, I had no idea how to get home to our little apartment in Elmhurst, Queens.   Hitchhiking in New York City was not an option.   What I did have was incentive.   I did not accept my poverty status as the final verdict on a young life.   To paraphrase the song, if I couldn't make it in America, I couldn't make it anywhere.   And so I kept at it until my Army discharge and then I moved back to Washington [how? if you were that poor, how did you travel?] where I finished college [once again, you've plastered over a lot of important, vital, details], worked at a civilian media job [how did you get that job?] and persisted until breaks came.   While poverty does not have simple solutions, there are solutions.   They begin with relaying stories to the poor about people who used to be in their situation but liberated themselves from a life of want and need by making the right life choices [exactly which 'right life choices'?].   Inspiration and hope do not come from government.   They come from within.   They also come from churches, more of which can and should 'adopt' a poor family and help them move out of poverty..."

can our colleges & universities be saved?
"...SAT and ACT examinations originated in the 1920s and 1960s, respectively, as meritocratic ways to allow applicants from less prestigious high schools and from minority groups to be assessed on their aptitude for college -- without the old-boy, establishment prejudices of class, gender and race.   Would such blind exams also work in reverse as national college exit tests? Could bachelor's degrees be predicated on certifying that graduates possess a minimum level of common knowledge?   Lawyers with degrees can only practice after passing bar exams.   Doctors cannot practice medicine upon the completion of M.D. degrees unless they are board certified.   Why can't undergraduate degrees likewise be certified?...   What would happen if some students from less prestigious state schools graduated from college with higher exit-test scores than the majority of Harvard and Yale graduates?   What if students still did not test any higher in analytics and vocabulary after thousands of dollars and several years of lectures and class-room hours?   Would schools then cut back on 'studies' courses, the number of [executives and] administrators or lavish recreational facilities to help ensure that students first and foremost mastered a classical body of common knowledge?   Would [executives and] administrators be forced to acknowledge that their campuses had price-gouged students but imparted to them little in return?   Public corporations open their books to shareholders.   Shouldn't publicly supported colleges and tax-exempt private universities do the same for [tax-victims] and tuition-paying students?   Shouldn't the public know how much of their contributions are allotted for particular academic departments, sports programs and study centers?..."

"In the British Barbados, for example, there were only a few hundred Negroes in 1640, but by 1685 they numbered 46K as against 20K whites.   The French islands, likewise, had 44K Negroes and 18K whites by 1700...   Negro immigration [reached] a total of about 15M slaves, while European immigration steadily increased, reaching a high point at the beginning of the 20th century when nearly 1M arrived each year." --- L.S. Stavrianos 1966 _World History Since 1500_ (quoted in in Franklin D. Scott 1968 _World Migration in Modern Times_ pg 169)

borders, immigration, and GOP "debate" on guest-work and green card visas
"...in response to a question from Dinan: TRUMP: 'I will.   First of all, I think and I know the H-1B very well.   And it's something that I frankly use and I shouldn't be allowed to use it.   We shouldn't have it.   Very, very bad for workers.   And second of all, I think it's very important to say, well, I'm a businessman and I have to do what I have to do.   When it's sitting there waiting for you, but it's very bad.   It's very bad for business in terms of -- and it's very bad for our workers and it's unfair for our workers.   And we should end it.   Very importantly, the Disney workers endorsed me, as you probably read.'     I can't say I trust him, but this is the answer any reformer needs to give when accused of hypocrisy, whether a politician on term limits and campaign finance restrictions or a businessman on indentured-worker visas: I need to operate in the system as it exists, but will work to change it once I'm in a position to do so.     Rubio may be an also-ran at this point, but his response to Dinan's question about Disney's replacement of American workers via the H-1b program is important to note in case he runs for office again in the future.   That's because his answer was false -- knowingly false.     Rubio said, straight out, 'it is illegal now under that program to use it to replace American workers'.   No, it isn't, and he knows that perfectly well.   Disney isn't the only firm that's used the visa this way; others include Fossil, Toys R Us, New York Life, Northeast Utilities, Southern California Edison, and others.   In fact, 10 senators addressed a letter to the Departments of Justice, Labor, and Homeland Security demanding an investigation into Southern California Edison's case (Rubio was not among them; I guess he hadn't come to work that day).   The Justice Department concluded its investigation 'with no adverse findings against the company', in the words of SCE's president.     That's because the H-1b program is designed to permit employers to hire cheaper foreign labor, whether replacing their existing American workers or skipping that step entirely and hiring foreigners from the get-go.   And Rubio's diversionary attempt to place the blame on 'consulting businesses' -- what are called bodyshops in the business, that bring in people on H-1b visas [or even sign up USA citizen workers into their stables] and then farm them out to employers -- is also false.   H-1b workers are cheap labor harming Americans whether they're employed by a bodyshop or directly by a large corporation.   [OTOH, even domestic bodies shopped are designed to make available cheap, pliant labor, by trimming back both pay and benefit packages of traditional/real full-time, long-term employment.]     Rubio has refused to co-sponsor any of the [very weak] H-1b reform bills authored by Grassley, Sessions, and others, preferring to write his own bill to address what he sees as the problems with the program.   Called the I-Squared Act, the fact that Michelle Malkin calls it Rubio's 'second-worst immigration bill' should give a hint about its contents.   Despite his forceful expression of outrage last night, the 'problem' Rubio seeks to address in his bill is that there aren't enough H-1B visas; it would quadruple the number, among other things.   Rubio's bill does nothing to prevent the replacement or displacement of American workers; in the words of Norman Matloff, UC David computer science professor, Rubio's bill 'contains no protections for USA workers whatsoever, not even the pretense of protection as some bills include'.   Don't take Matloff's word for it, just look at who endorses Rubio's H-1b bill: the Partnership for a New American Economy, whose co-chairman is Bob Iger, CEO of -- wait for it -- Disney.     The contrast between Trump's and Rubio's answers on the foreign-worker issue are telling.   Trump gave a vague answer promising to fix things; Rubio gave a more substantive answer that was knowingly false.   Which is worse?"

"This week we learned that Lebanon is no more.   It has been replaced by Hezbollah's Iranian colony in Lebanon.   Two weeks ago, Saudi Arabia listed Hezbollah as a terrorist organization and canceled its $3G aid package to the Lebanese military.   The Gulf Cooperation Council followed suit.   Rather than support the move by his sponsors and allies, Saad Hariri, the head of the anti-Hezbollah March 14 movement, flew to Syria to meet with Hezbollah leaders.   Saudi Arabia's decision to end its support for the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) doesn't mean that Saudi Arabia is making peace with Hezbollah.   It means that the Saudis are no longer willing to maintain the fiction that with enough support, the LAF will one day challenge Hezbollah's effective control of Lebanon.   Hezbollah and its bosses in Tehran don't seem too upset about the Sunnis' decision to acknowledge that Hezbollah is a terrorist group.   And they are right not to care.   In essence, the Saudi move is simply an admission that they have won.   Lebanon is theirs...   Hezbollah is able to dominate Lebanon because unlike the LAF and the March 14 movement, Hezbollah is willing to destroy Lebanon if doing so advances its strategic goals..."

"In the recession year of 1993, when the national unemployment rate stood at 6.8%, unemployment of PhD scientists and engineers was gauged at a trifling 1.2%.   However, the numbers are misleading.   The actual unemployment rate for this group is considerably higher when the category 'involuntarily out of field' (IOF) is taken into consideration.   The overall IOF rate persisted at 2.4% in 1993 and 1995, NSF reported, with a low of 3.3% in the life sciences and 6.3% in the physical sciences.   The real employment picture is even dimmer if the growing practice of serial post-doctoral appointments is recognized as a form of under-emplyment and stock-piling of surplus labor.   As job opportunities failed to keep up with PhD output, the post-doctoral system became a 'holding pattern' for otherwise unemployed young scientists." --- Daniel S. Greenberg 2001 _Science, Money, and Politics: Political Triumph and Ethical Erosion_ pg103

"Of course, the [Hanoverian British] king had never seen actual Highland dress, except on soldiers in the Black Watch or other Scottish regiments.   They wore the shorter version of the kilt, the philabeg or feileadh-beag, which strapped around the waist with a yard or so of plaid attached at the shoulder, instead of the breacon an feileadh, the full 12 yards of plaid baggily belted in the middle, which had been the traditional dress of Highland males for centures.   OTOH, the philabeg used less material, was easier to wear, and was less redolent of rural poverty and sleeping out of doors on an empty stomach.   So the king's visit made it the new 'authentic' Highland kilt.   It has remained so down to today -- just as the visit turned Scottish history into Highland history, with Lowlanders and Borderers largely forgotten..." --- Arthur Herman 2001 _How the Scots Invented the Modern World_ pp265-266

"The best illustration of this custom, since it had continued into modern times, was the special reverence accorded by Muslims to the sacred Black Stone built into a corner of the wall of the Ka'aba in Mecca.   Kissed by every pilgrim making the Haj [ha gira=pilgrimage] to the holy site, this stone was declared by the Prophet Muhammad to have fallen from heaven to earth where it was first given to Adam to absorb his sins after his expulsion from the Garden of Eden; later it was presented by the angel Gabriel to Abraham, the Hebrew Patriarch; finally it became the corner-stone of the Ka'aba -- the 'beating heart' of the Islamic world.   Geologists... unhesitatingly attributed a meteoric origin to the Black Stone.   Likewise the pairs of sacred stones, known as betyls, that some pre-Islamic Arab tribes carried on their desert wanderings were believed to have been aerolites -- & it was recognized that a direct line of cultural transmission linked these betyls (which were often placed in portable shrines) with the Black Stone of the Ka'aba & with the stone Tablets of the Law contained within the Ark...   betyls had been known in medieval Europe as lapis betilis -- a name: 'stemming from Semitic origins & taken over at a late date by the Greeks & Romans for sacred stones that were assumed to possess a divine life, stones with a soul [that were used] for divers superstitious, for magic & for fortune-telling.   They were meteoric stones fallen from the sky.'... Wolfram... alternative name for the Grail -- 'Lapsit exillis'... the most plausible by far was that it had been derived from 'lapis ex caelis' ('stone from heaven'), 'lapsit ex caelis' ('it fell from heaven'), or even 'lapis, lapsus ex caelis', 'stone fallen from heaven'." --- Graham Hancock 1992 _The Sign & the Seal_ pp 68-69 (citing Jennifer Westwood 1987 _The Atlas of Mysterious Places_ pg 74; Julian Morgenstern 1928, 1968 "The Book of the Covenant" _Hebrew Union College Annual_ vol 5; Julian Morgenstern 1942-1943, 1968 "The Ark, the Ephod & the Tent of Meeting" _Hebrew Union College Annual_ vol 17; W.H.
