"...In the early 2000s, Palestinian terrorists murdered more than 1K innocent Israelis.   There's only so much the Israeli military could do with their guns without threatening innocent lives.   They had rules of engagement -- stop and surround the terrorist, shoot at their feet to stop them and remove the explosives they were carrying.   Yet, they couldn't stop every terrorist and were at a loss as to how to stop the slaughter.   Colonel Tirza had an idea -- and the result is a 451 mile-long, 45 meter-wide barrier separating [Palestinian-occupied Eastern Israel from the rest of Israel]...   As Tirza explains in the video, this part of the barrier used to be only 6 meters, but was built higher because 'no one can jump 9 meters' [just over 29.5 feet].   The majority of the wall/fence (95%) is barbed wire.   The concrete portion the media chooses to report on accounts for the remaining 5%.   Construction cost 11G shekels ($2G), but has helped slow down the amount of terror attacks...   In 2014, the military caught 80 suicide bombers on their way to the fence, with bombs on them.   Last year, 150 Palestinian terrorists from Hamas wanted to take power in [Eastern Israel] from [the occupying] Palestinian authorities.   Hamas accounts for the largest number of terror combatants in the region, along with El Fatah.   Combatants try to cross the wall 20 to 30 times a week, Tirza explained.   'Every night we catch 5 to 20 terrorists inside [Eastern Israel].'..."

"Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) revealed at a hearing today that on 2015 December 3, the day after the San Bernardino terrorist attack, USCIS managers obstructed USAICE agents from entering the USCIS office building to try to arrest Enrique Marquez, an accomplice in the December 2 plot, and possibly others.   Marquez, who supplied some of the weapons used by Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik in their attack, had been expected at the USCIS building for an interview in connection with his sham green-card-motivated marriage to a Russian woman.   The USCIS manager apparently also refused to share the file on 'Mr. and Mrs.' Marquez with the USAICE agents.   As a former visa section manager, I don't have words to describe how perverse this was, nor can I imagine any plausible scenario in which the USCIS manager's actions were excusable.   We apparently have reached the point at which USCIS believes that it is more important to protect green card applicants than it is to protect the public by allowing ICE to arrest a terror plot accomplice (who also happened to be engaging in immigration fraud).   I guess USCIS has forgotten that it, too, is part of the Department of Homeland Security [DHS].   Such stove-piping of information on visa applicants has become deliberate policy in the Obama administration.   For example, information in the work permit/deferred action applications of 'Dreamers' (DACA) [i.e. NIGHTMAREs] is off-limits to law enforcement as a general matter.   The Rubio-Schumer Gang of Eight bill would have enacted the same confidentiality protections for amnesty applicants.   By the way, the title of the hearing was, 'The Security of U.S. Visa Programs'.   The general thrust of the testimony was that USA visa programs aren't really all that secure, and immigration laws aren't very well enforced.   The State Department's David Donohue, who is in charge of visa programs, had no idea which visas have the most problems with fraud.   In another embarrassing appearance, USAICE director Sarah Saldana struggled mightily to explain why an illegal alien who went out drag racing through Omaha streets while drunk, killing 21-year-old Sarah Root, is not considered to be a priority for deportation under current policies.   He was released and is now a fugitive.   John Roth, the DHS internal watch-dog, testified that 'archaic' practices at USCIS, together with an overwhelming work-load, meant that many ineligible applicants are getting benefits, which presents a major national security risk.   Senator Johnson expressed dismay at how long it has taken to implement a more robust visa holder tracking system, saying that for companies in the private sector, such as task would be as hard as 'falling off a log'.   In the one bright note of the hearing, senator Johnson and ranking member senator Carper (D-DE) agreed to work together on a bill that would require DHS to send foreign temporary visitors a text message reminder before their authorized duration of stay expires, as a way to help deter over-stays.   This is a good idea to help address a huge problem.   According to DHS records, in 2015 there were about 500K short-term visitors who over-stayed their visas."

"The H-1B worker wanted a few days off work so that he could visit his dying father in India; his employer (a fellow Indian) said not until you give me $300.     The H-1B did not have the money so he never saw his father alive again.   Or so one side argues in federal court.     At a time when a lot of H-1B controversies deal with whether the worker should get $90K a year rather than $70K [or $125K vs. $63K when comparing bare cost of living in Sili Valley vs. nationwide median] it is a splash of cold water to the face to encounter an H-1B conflict where real poverty is involved.     The case, a class action filed in the Federal District Court of the Eastern District of New York, revolves around the claims of Amjad Saiyed, who came to the United States in 2009 on an H-1B visa obtained by Archon Distribution, Inc.   The firm is run by Rashid Patel and operates in both New York and New Jersey.   It is not clear exactly what it distributes, but the plaintiff claims it grosses $11M a year.   The full set of court documents can be seen as case 2:14-cv-06862-JS-ARL on the PACER system.     The plaintiff invoked several laws, such as New York State's Wage Theft Prevention Act, and the federal Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act.     Whether Saiyed's claims are accurate or not has not yet been decided by the court, but the details in the court records are remarkable.   The worker claims that he and unspecified other Archon workers were paid considerably below the alleged wages recorded by Archon with the Department of Labor and additionally were forced to give the employer cash refunds.     As an example, in 2009 these were his wages as reported to the Department of Labor, to the Internal Revenue Service (on a W-2), and in actuality:   DoL: $48,006;   IRS: $28,500;   Actual: $20,977.     The difference between the last two numbers, the plaintiff said, was $7,523 in cash rebates to the employer (who may or may not have recorded that sum in his 1040 filings to IRS, a possibility not mentioned in the brief).     In a better world, the government's computers would be talking to each other, DoL and DHS would have been notified of the glaring $48,006 vs. $28,500 discrepancy, and Patel would have been hauled into court.   But we do not live in a better world.     Saiyed claimed similar wage reductions and shake-downs in other, more recent years.     The plaintiff, fearing that his employer would have him deported, said that his employer imposed slavery-like conditions on him.   Among the many charges (bear in mind this is one side of the story), were these:   Patel refused to give this worker any vacation days;   He did not grant this worker holidays, including July 4;   He did not grant any sick leave;   He threatened the worker's wife with the termination of H-4 status if the worker and his family did not perform personal chores for the Patel family; and   He did not provide workers' compensation insurance or health insurance.   Saiyed also states in the complaint -- and I have a little trouble believing this one -- that he had stay at work after the office was closed and had to work in the dark.     Patel has opted to be his own lawyer, despite the fact that the other side of the matter is represented by Michael Joseph Romano and his Mineola, NY, law firm.   Patel has simply denied the worker's charges, adding that Saiyed does not have a bachelor's degree, and is thus not eligible for an H-1B visa.   (Patel, of course, is the one who filed for the H-1B visa, so one wonders why he makes this argument.)     The employer, according to the Myvisajobs.com web-site, sought 11 other H-1B workers in the years 2010-2014.     The employer tried to have the case transferred from the Eastern District of New York to the federal courts in New Jersey and also sought to dismiss the case because Saiyed had returned to India (before his H-1B visa expired).   The sitting judge, Joanna Seybert, rejected both of Patel's motions, meaning that there will be a trial on the merits.     One hopes that the Indian press will report this Indian v. Indian case, and, particularly, pick up on the fact that a federal judge has ruled that [abused] H-1B workers can sue from India.     The total damages claimed by Saiyed are not shown in the court papers I have seen, but they would seem (including interest) to add to the better part of $1M.   If the worker wins and is, in fact, paid, he and his family can live well in India for the rest of their lives."

"...In the early days of the personal computers, gigantic corporations were viewed as one step away from the dinosaur tar pits, victims of legions of entrepreneurs armed with magic boxes that sat on their desktop and were filled with software costing hundreds to thousands of dollars [to even $100K] per app.   The software cost that much because that's what it cost to produce.   [Company executives and government bureaubums] hired designers, programmers, alpha and beta testers, and even documentation writers.   Somebody, of course, had to pay for them.   That would be the customer...   Well, one way is by stealing all manner of your personal information and selling it to those who want to buy it.   Most people think these buyers would be advertisers, but they're not.   They're specialized Internet [aggregators and] advertising companies with huge data-bases all about you.   Of course, another way to make money is for the company itself to use your information to sell you other things that they make.   This is a long, time-honored tradition in marketing.   But there is another big, data-hungry entity lurking out there as well.   It has unlimited, funny-money funding, zero accountability, no transparency, is protected by law and doesn't acknowledge that it is buying or trading your personal information.   It's very expensive for the government to collect personal information.   It also comes with court challenges, bad publicity and re-election failures.   Why not just buy it from those who steal it from you?...   the more personal information purveyors of 'free' can steal, the more they can charge their real customers (those who buy the information from the service provider) detailing the habits and preferences on 'customers' using 'free' services.   The activity becomes more virulent with time.   As in our opening link, even the companies selling you 'protection' eventually enter into the deception.   One final thought: Monopolies exist because they give the monopolistic regulators something of value in return.   Now why do you think they want all this personal information about you?"
And since the 1980s, the USA federal government has been making it easier for privacy violators.   It used to be that they had to search high and low to find US citizen designers and programmers willing to develop their privacy violation tools.   But tax changes were made to make more computer programmers less independent, to make them beholden to bodyshops -- temporary employers who could rent them to other firms, could dump them at the drop of a hat, and reduce or eliminate the need to invest in hardware, software development tools, and new-hire and on-going training.   By 1990, they started enacting laws to make it even easier to import even more younger, cheaper, more pliant computer programs, especially those with fewer or more flexible ethical standards which used to get in the ways of executives' privacy violation and speech/communication control schemes.
