"A privacy intrusion?   We're talking about people who aren't even in the USA [for the most part], who have no constitutional right to enter the country, and whose legal rights to privacy are nonexistent, since a) the burden is on them to prove they aren't excludable as terrorists, etc. when they arrive at a port of entry; and b) in any case, the federal Privacy Act clearly limits the reach of its delineated privacy rights to 'USA persons', who are defined as citizens and lawfully resident aliens.   What could these 'immigration, civil liberties, and other groups' be thinking?   Apparently in their fantasy world [the Muslim terrorist attacks on 2001/09/11] never happened and would-be jihadist martyrs have never used social media to declare their allegiance to various and sundry militant Islamic terror groups before carrying out horrific attacks.   Never mind the FB posts of Tashfeen Malik, for example, which were not examined by USA officials before she was admitted to the country to marry her fellow jihadist; they then went on to kill 14 and seriously wound 22 more in San Bernardino, Calif.     Apparently we should all live in a cocoon of innocence and disregard the reality that some foreigners' hate toward the West (and, more specifically, toward America and its citizens) is so strong that they will do whatever they must to get here and perpetrate atrocities in the name of Allah.     IOW, don't believe your lyin' eyes or ears when you read or see media accounts to the contrary as Islamist-inspired terrorist attacks happen all over the world.   Most especially, don't believe the ones about terrorists from countries with visa waiver privileges -- you know, like the attacks in Denmark, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, [Austria], and France, not to mention the foiled attacks and plotters arrested in Spain, the United Kingdom, and elsewhere."

"...Granted, most poor people are unlikely to have a passport, but the state will issue any legal resident an identification card.   Are civil rights groups who sued the state contending that poor and minority people are so inept that they can't apply for an identification card?   If that is their position, how are they able to apply for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistant Program) benefits, which require a photo ID?   Why is voting the one category in which you don't have to prove your citizenship and legal residence?   I will answer that question in a moment.   Three years ago during a similar controversy, Ashe Schow of The Washington Examiner compiled a list of 24 things that require a photo ID.   You must have a photo ID if you are 25 or under and wish to purchase alcohol or cigarettes.   Store signs say so.   Want to open a bank account? Photo ID required.   Here are the rest of the categories: applying for welfare, Medicaid and [Socialist Insecurity] (presumably poor people take advantage of one or more of these programs); unemployment benefits (ditto); rent/buy a house, or apply for a mortgage; drive/buy/rent a car; get on an airplane; get married; buy a gun; adopt a pet; rent a hotel room; apply for a hunting or fishing license; buy a cellphone; visit a casino; pick up a prescription (or buy restricted over-the-counter medications); donate blood; apply for a license to hold a demonstration; buy an 'M'-rated video game; purchase nail polish at CVS..."

"...as a senator, Clinton voted for the Secure Fence Act of 2006 which required, among other things, 'physical infrastructure enhancements to prevent unlawful entry by aliens into the United States'.   I also explained that it required 'operational control over the entire international land and maritime borders of the United States' and operational control was defined as: 'the prevention of all unlawful entries into the United States, including entries by terrorists, other unlawful aliens, instruments of terrorism, narcotics, and other contraband'.   The Secure Fence Act would have created 700 miles of fencing along the [nearly 2K mile long] USA-Mexico border and required that DHS 'shall provide for least 2 layers of reinforced fencing, the installation of additional physical barriers, roads, lighting, cameras, and sensors' along a number of specific stretches.   After it was signed into law, however, an amendment gave much more discretion to DHS to decide where and if it wanted to construct fencing, rendering the act much less effective.   It sure sounds like 'she wanted a wall', to quote Trump.   But I gave PolitiFact more research.   In 2006 October, Clinton gave a speech before the Council on Foreign Relations in which she called for an amnesty, but also said the USA must 'Secure our borders with technology, personnel, physical barriers if necessary in some places; and we need to have tougher employer sanctions.'   On illegal aliens, Clinton said: 'If they've committed transgressions of whatever kind, they should be obviously deported.'   And I alerted PolitiFact to a speech Clinton gave at a high school in Windham, NH, in November last year in which she comes across as a border security enthusiast.   She said:   'Well look, I voted numerous times when I was a Senator to spend money to build a barrier to try to prevent illegal immigrants from coming in.   And I do think you have to control your borders.   We need to secure our borders, I'm for it, I voted for it, I believe in it, and we also need to deal with the families, the workers who are here, who have made contributions, and their children.'...   Since then her talk of building 'bridges, not walls' leaves one wondering what Clinton's current position is on border security.   For whatever reason, Clinton seems unable [politically unwilling] to take a clear position...   Trump suggested his wall would be around 1K miles due to natural barriers that already exist on parts of the border.   Specifically, he said: ''You know, interestingly, the wall on the southern border, it's -- really, if you think it's a thousand miles.   It's 2K miles, but... you also have natural terrain which is automatically a barrier, which is a good thing.   So you're talking about a thousand.'...   the article [St. Petersburg/Tampa Bay propaganda piece] wasn't designed to educate people about where Clinton and Trump stand on border security...   Bottom line: It's totally true that Clinton once supported a double-wall border fence that never got constructed, and it's totally true that Trump's proposed wall is 300 miles longer."

"Following Donald Trump's town hall appearance on the Fox News Channel's 'Hannity' show, in which he 'softened' his tone on immigration, The Hill has published an article, 'Hard-liners shrug off Trump's softer tone on immigration', that quotes a few individuals such as Joe Arpaio, Maricopa county AZ, sheriff, and Alabama senator Jeff Sessions, who persevere in their support of the Republican presidential candidate.     During the town hall, Trump said, 'Let me go a step further: They'll pay back-taxes, they have to pay taxes.   There's no amnesty, as such, there's no amnesty, but we work with them.'   A number of supporters have tried hard to suggest it isn't a flip-flop, but I lean more toward Mark Krikorian's view on this, as he expressed it in National Review.   It is a turnabout, and a dramatic and disappointing one.     You can say it won't be an 'amnesty'; you can say 'they will have to pay back taxes', but we've heard all that before, and when you look at the details -- as CIS did, exhaustively, with the notorious Gang of Eight bill [S744] -- it all proves to be hokum.   Come to think about it, isn't that precisely why Trump hammered senator Marco Rubio so successfully early in the nomination season?   Because he was a prevaricator and flip-flopper on the need for immigration enforcement?     If you think that swirling sound isn't an immigration enforcement policy headed down the throne quickly, consider, for example, this snippet from that The Hill article: 'Representative Chris Collins (R-NY), one of the earliest Trump backers, is promoting a system that provides legal status and work permits to the millions of people in the country illegally.   He's calling it 'rhetorical deportation' –– and he suggested Wednesday that Trump might be open to embracing the concept.'     Just what, exactly, is 'rhetorical deportation'?   I'm thinking it would be kind of like a judge sentencing a criminal at his trial to '10 years in rhetorical prison' (collective gasp from the courtroom onlookers at the draconian sentence) and then sending him home with a stern lecture about being a better person.   Such nonsense.   Maybe Trump can also build a 'rhetorical wall with Mexico' and call the job done [just as congress did after Reagan's amnesty concession, as GHWBush did, as Clinton did, as Shrub did]..."

"All too often, immigration polls are not designed to get at what Americans really think about immigration, but instead are written to create a certain narrative.   Many polls are financed by activist groups who simply want to create the appearance of widespread public support for amnesty.   The advocates have two main goals: (1) provide lobbyists with polling data that they can use to browbeat politicians into supporting their cheap-labor, open-border agenda; and (2) encourage the media to write head-lines that don't really reflect the findings, but nevertheless advance the notion that Americans love open borders.     The Pew Research Center has done just that with a new poll.   The poll contains a few different questions, but the one getting all the press asks Americans about building a border wall.     Specifically, Pew asks: 'All in all, would you favor or oppose building a wall along the entire border with Mexico?'   According to Pew, 61% of Americans oppose building a wall along the entire border with Mexico.     A reporter happened to bring this poll to my attention hours before it got into the news cycle, and I noted that it's not that informative of a question because of the weasel word 'entire'.   I explained that even presidential candidate Donald Trump isn't proposing building a wall along the entire USA-Mexico border.   In other words, I noted that even though I'm in favor of a border fence because it would help deter some illegal immigration and drug trafficking, I would have responded 'no' to that question due to the fact that there are locations along the border with geography that serves as a natural barrier.     I also told the reporter that I bet most reporters would not mention the word 'entire' when reporting the results.     Sure enough, I was right.   And, as is predictable, the media is taking it a step further by using their mischaracterization of the poll to discredit Trump's proposed border wall, and border security generally.   Check out some of the head-lines the Pew poll generated: 'Poll Finds Most Americans Oppose Wall on USA-Mexico Border'; 'Pew: 6-in-10 oppose Donald Trump's proposal to build border wall'; and 'Big majority in poll oppose Trump's proposed wall on USA-Mexico border'.     Of course, those who took the poll weren't responding to Trump's proposed wall.   They were asked to respond to a proposal of a wall across the entire southern border, something no candidate has proposed.   The media narrative is misleading, but Pew should have expected this result and planned against it with better, or additional, questions.   If truth was the goal, Pew would be calling on the media to correct the head-lines.   If accurate reporting was the goal, the media wouldn't be writing these head-lines in the first place.     'A more accurate head-line would be: Americans Don't Support a Wall Across the Entire Southern Border and Still May Support Trump's 1K-Mile Wall, but We Just Don't Know Because Pew Didn't Ask'.     The border wall issue is something I had to address last week when PolitiFact called our office to determine the truthfulness of Trump's statement that 'Hillary Clinton wanted a wall, a number of years ago.   She wanted a wall'.   As I explained to PolitiFact, it is true that Clinton voted for the Secure Fence Act in 2006 and that it would have mandated 700 miles of double border fencing that was required, under the terms of the law, to stop 'all unlawful entries into the United States'.   (The wall was never fully constructed since the law was amended not long after passage.)     As I detailed in a recent blog post, [St. Petersburg/Tampa Bay Times] PolitiFact decided that Trump's statement was only "half true" because PolitiFact felt that Trump was equating his wall proposal with Clinton's past support for 700 miles of fencing.   They argued that 2K miles is much more than 700 miles.   I explained to PolitiFact that they shouldn't do a mileage comparison since Trump hasn't proposed a wall across the entire 2K-mile border with Mexico, and in fact has proposed only 1K miles.   That little fact never made it into the article even though it would necessarily have changed the analysis.     The point is that there are too many reporters who are too lazy to do their homework and too quick to jump on a narrative that promotes their worldview.     Had they any care for the truth, the writers of these articles would have asked Pew why they polled on the concept of a border wall that crosses the entire border instead of polling on a 1K-mile or 700-mile fence.   (I sent a tweet to the author on this point and will update if he responds.)     If Pew were a little more honest, they would ask the poll a few different ways.   The might result might have been different had Pew asked: 'Do you support additional fencing or walling along the USA-Mexico border that is longer than what is currently there?'     And the results would likely be very different if Pew had asked: 'Clinton voted for 700 miles of additional fencing along the border in 2006 [but it was never built] and Trump is proposing 1K additional miles along the border; do you think additional fencing or a wall would be helpful in deterring illegal immigration?'     In fact, buried deep within Pew's full report, Pew notes a CNN poll from 2006 that asked respondents whether they support 'Building a fence along 700 miles of the border with Mexico'.   The results: 54% said 'yes' and 44% said 'no'.   Question wording matters.   Pew also notes that CNN did a similar poll only months later and the results flipped (46% in favor, 48% opposed).   It seems unlikely that suddenly there's massive opposition to improved border security, despite the head-lines currently being pumped out of [propaganda boiler-rooms].     Better, more detailed questions always provide a better picture of what Americans really think, but Pew decided to ask about something that doesn't exist in any proposal in this election cycle -- a 2K-mile-long border that covers the entire USA-Mexico border [while failing to ask, for instance, whether they would prefer 100 miles out of nearly 2K, 500 miles, 1K miles, 1,500 miles, or 2K miles of the USA-Mexico border fenced, and, seperately, whether they would prefer 100 miles, 500 miles, 1K, 2K, 3K, 4K, 5K, 5,525 miles of the USA-Canada border fenced, whether 500 miles, 1K miles, 1,500 miles or more of the Alaska-Canada border they would prefer to be fenced, and what levels of guarding they would prefer].     A different question in the Pew poll also suffers from a flaw that pops up in nearly every poll claiming to show public support for amnesty.   In inquiring about how to handle illegal aliens, Pew gave respondents a choice that is supposed to indicate support for amnesty.   It asks respondents if they support 'creating a way for immigrants already here illegally to become citizens if they meet certain requirements'.     As I've noted elsewhere, this nebulous 'certain requirements' language is a favorite of amnesty advocates because it leaves it to the respondent to imagine any type of 'requirement' that he needs to justify the idea of legalizing illegal aliens.   It makes the response very attractive, which is the goal of push polls.   Some respondents may think, 'Yes, I'd support legalization, but only if one of those requirements is proving that the person has never fraudulently used an American citizen's [Socialist Insecurity number (SIN)].'   Obviously, that would disqualify millions of illegal aliens.     Another respondent might think, 'Yes, but only if one of those requirements is paying a fine of $100K to legalize.'   Neither of these 'certain requirements' would ever happen in a comprehensive amnesty bill, but that's not important for pollsters trying to prove Americans love amnesty.   A simple follow-up about the type of requirements people are imagining would be informative and might destroy the entire narrative; naturally, that's never asked.     The point is that even though these results are being sold as indicating public support for amnesty, in actuality the poll may indicate something quite different.     If mass legalization were so popular it would have happened under [president GWBush=Shrub].   Or under [president Barack Hussein Obummer].   But it was rejected twice despite a whopping $1.5G being spent by lobbyists between 2008 and 2012.   Any lobbyist confused about why amnesty hasn't happened should stop reading flawed push polls."

"...if they can't figure it out they should not be allowed to stay in the USA.   The use of the word *stay* above is deliberate.   This program is not for able business people who live in other countries, it is for aliens who have already been in the USA for several years and who want to (and apparently have failed to) figure out how our immigration system works, hence my term, inept.   I will get back to that point momentarily.   But first, let's back up a bit.   The 'parole' authority is for very special circumstances.   For example, someone has an acute and unusual brain injury that can be fixed only in a USA hospital, not the ones in the home country; or, to use a different example, the person is needed to testify in a USA court case.   It is not intended to cover whole classes of people.   There is already a large collection of programs that could be used by a reasonably competent entrepreneur with a little imagination and one or more of these could be manipulated to secure a visa, though not all of the programs would benefit all of the entrepreneurs.   There are the EB-5 immigrant investor program, the treaty trader and treaty investor programs, various loopholes in the H and L visa programs, some uses of the J-1 program, the O visas for the outstanding, the first and second parts of the Employment-Based Immigrant Programs, and I am sure others that I have missed.   So the proposal is both needless and yet another effort by the [Obummer regime] to open every conceivable hole in the immigration control system.."

  "First, Trist's early dispatches indicated that the Mexicans remained intractable.   One method of convincing them that he meant to have his way was to abandon the negotiations while continuing to pursue a military solution.   Second, as Scott's army advanced Polk began to reconsider his own earlier thinking.   Influenced by Secretary of the Treasury Robert Walker, a southern expansionist, and Secretary of State Buchanan, he now wondered whether it might not be wise to take all of Northern Mexico down to the 26th parallel instead of stopping just below San Diego.   Third, the cordiality that existed between Scott and Trist worried Polk, who, a frequent conspirator himself, forever worried about political conspiracies.   Trist received his letter of recall on 1847 November 18, at a moment when it seemed that a successful negotiation was in the offing.   Nevertheless, he prepared to leave and would have done so but for the importunings of Scott, the British charge, and other foreign as well as Mexican observers, who thought he might be throwing away the only chance for peace.   These people feared that if Trist left, the war would continue, and the extremists who wanted to carry on the war at all costs would take power.
